A maternity nurse will stay with you and your newborn child for 24 hours for up to 6 days a week, providing you with continual support, advice and much-needed opportunities for rest and recovery after the birth.
To get the maximum benefit, we advise booking a maternity nurse for 4-6 weeks. She will help you to establish a 24 hour routine for your baby focusing on effective feeding and sleep patterns to ensure that your baby settles easily and quickly into your family. Your maternity nurse will be responsible for cleaning the baby's room and doing all the baby's laundry. She will also know how to look after you, making sure that you get adequate sleep and that you are eating and drinking well.
A night nanny will just come in to your home for the night itself and leave you in the morning; she will stay with your baby during the night, and will either bring your baby to you if you are breastfeeding or help you breastfeed in the nursery if you feel more comfortable feeding there; she will then settle your baby after their feed so that you can go back to bed and sleep. If you are bottle feeding, your night nurse won't disturb you during the night at all and will take care of all of the night time feeds. It is possible to have the same nanny for between 1 and 7 nights a week for a maximum of 3 months (or longer, if required). Ideally, it is best to book a night nanny before you give birth. Like this, you are more likely to be able to have the same nanny for the entire period.
Night nanny hours are usually between 7pm and 9am or 8pm and 10am. During this time your nanny will:
- provide advice and support for you as new parents
- prepare & sterilise bottles
- change nappies
- help with or give night feeds
- settle your baby
- dress and prepare your baby in the morning
- give help and advice on establishing your baby into a sleep routine
You will need to provide a bed in your baby's room for your night nanny to sleep in while the baby is sleeping. We recommend a chair or sofa that can be converted into a bed. Contact us if you'd like to buy one of our bestselling single sofa beds.
